What is a Greenway?
A greenway is a linear parcel of land set aside to preserve open space. Greenways are generally located in floodplain areas, along wooded stream corridors unsuitable for development. Often these corridors that harbor Statesville's greenway trails provide access to these pristine areas that otherwise would have been lost.
The City of Statesville has been building greenways to bring open spaces within easy walking distance of our homes. Greenways are an environmental, economic, and recreational resource for all to enjoy.

Greenways enhance our lives in many ways by:
- Providing a recreational amenity for walking, jogging, and bicycling in a natural setting remote from traffic;
- Preserving pristine open space to enhance Statesville's quality of life;
- Linking our neighborhoods with parks, schools, community centers, and other neighborhoods;
- Helping control stormwater runoff, curb erosion, and minimize flooding which can damage our property;
- Improving Statesville's water quality by buffering streams, filtering pollutants, and recharging our groundwater;
- Adding value to our property by merit of proximity.
Statesville Greenways.org is commited to working with local officials to preserve and expand the greenway system in Statesville and surrounding areas.
Building a greenway network requires linking together neighborhoods, finding connections, and protecting community resources. It requires the support and leadership of government staff and the help of local, state, and federal elected officials. It involves volunteers and corporations, users and builders, landowners and agencies.

The Statesville Recreation and Parks Department has been working on resolving some of the issues with the existing greenway. Here is an update as of April 12, 2012:
The Statesville Recreation and Parks Department has been working on resolving some of the issues with the existing greenway. Here is an update as of April 12, 2012:
- City officials have selected a engineering firm to complete preliminary construction plans on the US HWY 21 underpass connection. This connection will join the Gregory Creek section of the greenway with the Fourth Creek section of the greenway. This will make it possible to get on the greenway at the Museum Rd access point and travel to the Broad St access point without having leave the trail. It is estimated that it will take 6 to 8 months to get the plans and estimates together and then the City will have to search for funding to pay for the project, before construction can begin.
- Iredell County recieved grant funding from the Carolina Thread Trail to complete a corridor design study for a new section of trail that would connect The Fort Dobbs, State Historic site to the Gregory Creek section of existing greenway. The county had a meeting with land owners who's land was in the original proposed path that the trail would take to Fort Dobbs. So the process of connecting Fort Dobbs to the Statesville Greenway is well underway.
- Greenway usage seems to be increasing, especially along the Fourth Creek Section, that runs from Free Nancy Rd to Broad St.
- Statesville Greenways.org is currently working with the City of Statesville and NCDOT to try and connect the Broad St access area by bridge to the section of greenway across Fourth Creek.
